My relationship with comics has been a long one.

Growing up, I used to love reading stuff like Garfield, Foxtrot, and Peanuts. Sunday mornings were a blast, because that’s when the newspaper would publish an entire section chock full of comics (the “funnies”). The Pittsburgh Gazette in particular had puzzle sections for kids, for some reason a lot of it revolved around Foxtrot.

I loved comics so much that I made my own. All of them sucked because I wasn’t funny and couldn’t draw for shit (some things never change), but the one I remember most was called “Dunce Chumps”. It was basically a less-clever foul-mouthed version of Peanuts, the two main characters were Zit Face (Charlie Brown) and Idiot McCurdle (Lucy). There was also a character named Hippy Winfroy who had a curly ponytail and hoop earring, and wore an Eagles jersey with the number 5 on it (which actually had nothing to do with Donovan McNabb, I just liked the number 5). It was about as good as you’d expect it to be.

I later moved on to making comic books. I did one throughout high school called Adam the Assassin, which I’ve talked about previously here. The same comic also landed me in trouble with the Secret Service. The entire thing was just me using a self-insert to kill anyone I didn’t like, though it later evolved to have a more coherent plot.

I also got into web comics. Some of my favorites were Perry Bible Fellowship, XKCD, Whomp!, and SMBC. Of course, I absolutely just had to try my own hand at making a web comic of my own. Thus, “Red-blooded American” was born:

RBA was just a collection of comics with President George W. Bush making racist jokes. I guess it was better than Dunce Chumps, but just barely. I think I made five of them before I gave up.

These days I don’t really follow any web comics. I’ll peek in on PBF and SMBC occasionally, and sometimes I’ll see Stonetoss being posted on 4chan, usually /pol/ or /fit/. But for the most part, I just don’t have the time or interest to go looking for new web comics to follow.

That brings us to r/Comics. r/Comics is a subreddit for people to post their own 100% OC donut steel comics, and definitely isn’t full of libtard political bullshit.

I’m writing this less than a week after Charlie Kirk’s assassination (which I’ve already written about), so I’m expecting it to be a shitstorm of cheering about a man getting shot in the throat and how conservatives are all le heckin evilrino.

This comic was probably done in five minutes, but it’s still better than most of the other political comics that are just “The right is le heckin badarino, fuck Drumpf”.

Alright, I think I’ve just about tapped this well dry.

I kind of wish I had saved at least one or two Dunce Chumps comics. They were genuinely fucking awful, but it might have been funny to shitpost them to r/Comics and act like they were a serious work. They were still unironically better than some of the trash I shared here today.

I’ve been trying to find new subreddits to visit, but it’s proving harder than I thought it would. I really don’t know enough about Reddit to know where to look. I feel kind of lazy having to rely on my readers for suggestions (even though I really do appreciate them). How the hell are y’all finding this shit? I guess I’m just getting old and out of touch, and my finger’s no longer on the pulse like it used to be. If there’s some secret database of cringy subreddits that I can use that would make my job here so much easier.

Since next month is October, we’ll probably be revisiting either r/Witchcraft or r/WitchesvsPatriarchy. I haven’t decided which yet, so if you’ve got a preference let me know.
